I travelled to Melbourne last weekend to compete in the first race of the Victorian Gatorade Triathlon Series Race 1. It was a sprint distance held in Elwood beach, very near the more famous St Kilda beach which the bike course covered. First of all, a big thank you to my para friend Dale Grant for hosting me during the weekend and introducing me to "Enduroman" John van Wisse (pictured with me at the swimming pool, which we visited on the Saturday). If you've never heard of John, he's the record holder of the Arch to Arc challenge, 140km run from London's Marble Arch to the coast, 35km swim to cross the English channel and get on French soil and then 290km ride to the Arc the Triomphe on the Champs-Elysees! It was a great honour to meet him and have a chat. The race itself went well, aside from me missing the start by a minute...I was too relaxed! There was some swirl at sea and wind on the bike, I took that as good practice to test my legs. The course was very good and well marshalled, I much enjoyed it. Post race refreshments with the sausage sizzle and talks were great. I had a good time all around that weekend. Overall, I finished 12th out of 88 in the 35-39 AG, which could have been 9th place without the miss start. No regrets, that's racing. Most important to me was to do a sprint distance which I didn't do since April this year and the outcome was a success to me. Many thanks to the Gatorade Triathlon Series for the awesome race pictures too.
